Lecturer of Chinese Language (Middlebury, VT)

Lecturer of Chinese Language, Middlebury College, MIDDLEBURY, VT—The Middlebury College Greenberg-Starr Department of Chinese seeks to hire one Lecturer for the three academic years 2025-2028, with the possibility of renewal after the completion of the first contract. We are seeking a candidate dedicated to language instruction and eager to participate in a department with a long history of teamwork and commitment to high quality education. The successful candidate will have a Master’s in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language or an equal or higher degree in a related field and experience teaching Modern Standard Chinese language (“Mandarin”); this experience should include teaching during the academic year in the United States, during the summer in an immersive residential program, and/or in China during a study abroad program. The successful candidate will teach Classical Chinese and Modern Standard Chinese at the 2nd-, 3rd- and/or 4th-year levels during the fall and spring semesters, teach 1st-year Chinese every other year in our Winter Term, contribute to the evaluation and, as appropriate, the redesign of some of our most advanced classes, work to ensure continued cooperation and efficient articulation among the Chinese Department, the Middlebury Chinese School, and our Schools Abroad, and explore the possibility of creating a January term course that takes a group of students to China and/or a course for students who speak Chinese but do not read or write the language.
