About the Job:
WKU seeks a dynamic and innovative scholar to join our faculty as an Assistant/Associate Professor in Translation Studies. The ideal candidate will have expertise in Chinese and English, using both the theoretical and practical aspects of translation. The candidate will contribute to the development and delivery of courses in translation studies and conduct research in areas such as translation theory, interpretation, or translation technology. This is a full-time, tenure track position, teaching 24 credits over 10 months. A 6-credit course release is available in the first three years for grant proposal development and other significant research initiatives. Startup grants will be provided to support student engagement research programs.

This position is appointed on a 3-year contract at the first instance, effective for the year 2025 and renewable upon successful reappointment review.

Teaching assignments and related responsibilities may include day, evening, weekend and online courses. Interest or experience in using advanced instructional technologies to improve the teaching/learning process is highly desirable. All faculty may be required to teach General Education courses as needed. Opportunities are also available to teach disciplinary support courses. Visiting Assistant Professor of Chinese (Spartanburg, SC)

Wofford College invites applications for a visiting assistant professor to teach first- through fourth-year Chinese language, literature, and culture courses in the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures for the 2025-2026 academic year. EXPECTATIONS
The teaching load will be 3-0-4. In the fall of 2025, the person selected will teach two Chinese language courses and one Chinese culture course taught in English. In the spring 2026 semester, the visiting assistant professor of Chinese will teach two Chinese language courses, one Chinese culture course taught in English, and one Chinese literature course taught in English. The Chinese culture or literature courses will be determined in consultation with the hired candidate. This candidate will not be required to teach during the college’s interim, which runs the entire month of January. The preferred candidate will have a Ph.D. in Chinese by the time of the appointment in August 2025. However, ABD candidates will also be considered. Lecturer of Chinese (St. Mary’s City, MD)

The Department of International Languages & Cultures at St. Mary’s College of Maryland is accepting applications for the three-year position of Lecturer of Chinese (Mandarin) beginning August 1, 2025. Lecturer teaches the equivalent of seven courses a year (three four-credit courses a semester plus two one-credit conversation courses), coordinates the Chinese program, assists the Asian Studies program and has nominal research expectations. The Chinese Language Centre (CLC), established in 1998, has been providing Chinese language teaching services for the students of the University with different needs. Job Functions

(c) oversee and manage all businesses of the Centre including the delivery of subjects that it offers;

(d) ensure optimal deployment of human, financial and other resources in the Centre;

(e) represent the Centre to liaise with the Centre’s stakeholders for the planning and delivery of the Centre’s educational missions;

(f) ensure the quality and relevance of the Centre’s teaching activities with the aim of enhancing students’ communication skills;

(g) develop and lead initiatives that enable and encourage the sharing and promotion of good teaching practice; and

(h) undertake other duties as assigned by the Director of Language Education Institute or the Central Management Team of the University from time to time.

Qualifications

Applicants should have:

(a) a PhD or a professional doctorate in Chinese Language/Literature, Educational Research, Chinese Language Education or a related field;

(b) substantial years of relevant post-qualification experience in a senior academic/teaching position in higher education;

(c) proven administrative and management capabilities, excellent leadership, interpersonal, communication and team-building skills;

(d) a proven track record in leading innovation in education, particularly with knowledge of and/or expertise in technology-enhanced pedagogies;

(e) a proven track record in teaching excellence that creates deep and lasting impact on student learning and development;

(f) outstanding contribution to programme development leading to substantial enhancement in the quality of educational provision; and

Visiting Instructor in Chinese as a Second Language (Suzhou, China)

Chinese Assistant Clincal/Teaching Professor (West Lafayette IN)

The School of Languages and Cultures (SLC) in the College of Liberal Arts at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana welcomes applications for the non-tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Teaching (non-tenure track clinical faculty) in Chinese to begin in Fall 2025.

The person hired for this position will normally teach four classes of three credits each per semester. The teaching assignment will include courses in Chinese as well as courses that are part of the College of Liberal Arts’ Integrated Cornerstone first-year curriculum focused on written or oral communication (e.g., SCLA 101, SCLA 102). In addition to teaching, some service activities with SLC and the Chinese program will be expected, such as participation in extracurricular events or program building/program-promoting activities, as arranged with the faculty in Chinese and the SLC Head. There may be opportunities for program-related special assignments, such as community outreach activities or others.

The candidate must have completed a Ph.D. in Chinese Linguistics or Second Language Acquisition with focus on Chinese, or related fields prior to the start of this position. The candidate should also have experiences in teaching various levels of Chinese language and demonstrate evidence of teaching excellence.

The Language Education Institute (LEI), a new academic unit to be established on 1 July 2025, will formulate policies, design curricula and deliver teaching activities for the education of languages among students at PolyU, focusing mainly on the Chinese and English languages. LEI will strive to become a regional and international leader in language education, particularly in the application of the latest technologies in language learning, teaching and assessment. It will drive scholarship and best practices in language education among the PolyU community.

LEI will comprise the Chinese Language Centre (CLC), English Language Centre (ELC) and Technology-Enhanced Language Education Centre (TELEC), which are constituent units with their own Directors. Job Functions

Description

The Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations (EALC) at the University of Chicago invites applications for a position as Director of the Chinese Language Program with an expected start date of September 1, 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The selected candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Senior Instructional Professor, Associate Senior Instructional Professor, or Senior Instructional Professor, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The initial appointment is for a minimum term of 3 years, although longer initial appointments may be possible depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate. The position is renewable upon successful review.

The selected candidate will serve as Chinese Language Program Director (LPD), which serves approximately 200 students annually at 5 levels of instruction. The LPD is responsible for overseeing the curriculum and budget for the program, the placement and assessment of students, co-curricular programming, and the supervision and review of a staff of 5 unionized Instructional Professors. The LPD typically teaches 4 courses per year (on the quarter system) in the program, and may be asked to take on limited administrative or management responsibilities outside of the Chinese Language Program.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements include ACTFL Advanced-High proficiency in Chinese or equivalent, and a terminal degree (MA or PhD), preferably in Second Language Acquisition or a field related to Chinese language instruction. Applicants must also have prior teaching experience at the college level and the potential to be a successful manager of a language program. Specialized training in second language teaching or acquisition, and prior experience managing a language program, is also highly desirable. Candidates must also be able to demonstrate their language proficiency via certification or in the interview process.

The successful candidate will work with existing faculty members in the Chinese Language Program and must be able to teach the novice to advanced Chinese language courses for both heritage and non-heritage language learners. Duties include a six-course teaching load (typically two courses per quarter) at all levels for heritage and non-heritage learners. This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the http://nau.edu/Provost/Resources-Policies/. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU’s BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following election. FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Languages and Cultures Department invites applications for TWO tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in any of the following languages: Chinese, French, Japanese, or Spanish, beginning as early as the Fall semester of 2024. USNA is a service academy and top-tier liberal arts college with demonstrated undergraduate teaching and producing quality peer-reviewed research. The research specialization is open. Responsibilities include teaching language across all proficiency levels and upper-level courses related to specialization. The successful candidate will teach 9 hours/semester, maintain an active program of scholarly research, and contribute appropriate service to support the departmental and institutional educational mission.

The Naval Academy Languages and Cultures Department is a mix of civilian faculty and military officers. The Department offers majors in Arabic, Chinese, and Foreign Area Studies, and minors in seven languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish).

This is an onsite, 10-month compensation, excepted service federal faculty position with a 3-year renewable appointment, a highly competitive salary, and full federal benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Summer research support may be available for the first three years of new appointments; after that, civilians may receive partial research support by competing for internal research grants. Additionally, travel funds may be available.

MINIMUM AND OTHER DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in one of the following disciplines: Chinese, French, Japanese, OR Spanish (anticipated completion of Ph.D. no later than June 2024 is acceptable)
Native or near-native proficiency in at least one of the following languages: Chinese, French, Japanese, OR Spanish
Native or near-native English proficiency

Other Desirable Qualifications:
Experience in college-level language instruction
Commitment to inclusive pedagogy and working with a diverse student body and faculty
Research expertise in any of the following, but not limited to: Literature, Linguistics, French Literature 20th and 21st Century, Francophone Studies, Latin American 20th and 21st Century, Cultural Studies, Media and Film Studies, Foreign Area Studies, Gender Studies, or Transnational Studies

If applying for a position in French or Spanish, the ability to teach both French and Spanish is ideal
For the Japanese or Chinese applicants, they should demonstrate a clear understanding of the linguistic properties of Japanese/Chinese; knowledge of the cultural background necessary to teach the language, and technology-related pedagogy
