The Chinese Flagship Center at Indiana University Bloomington is seeking a full-time Pedagogy Specialist to begin as soon as possible or by August 2018 at the latest. The Chinese Flagship Program provides undergraduate students from any school or major at IU the opportunity to attain professional-level language proficiency in Mandarin through classroom learning, co-curricular activities, and overseas study and internship including an entire “Capstone” year in China. The Pedagogy Specialist fulfills a critical role to the program’s success by providing pedagogical expertise and assisting the Director with the program’s academic activities. The position also provides administrative support.
Duties: Provides collaborative leadership in developing and implementing the center’s academic activities including curricular, co-curricular, and overall program design; tutor recruitment and training; and student application reviews. Provides administrative support in areas including managing the tutoring program, grant writing, program articulation with administrative structures, program promotion and recruitment, and center staff supervision. Occasionally teaches various Flagship-related courses as needed. Travels as needed domestically and abroad (usually limited to 1–3 trips per year).
Qualifications: Required: Master’s degree or higher (PhD preferred) in Chinese, linguistics, language pedagogy, or related fields; at least two years of Chinese language teaching experience in a college or comparable setting (preferably at the advanced and superior levels); expertise and experience in curriculum and material design; and native or near-native proficiency in both English and Chinese. Candidates must also be good collaborators and able to communicate with diverse audiences. Preferred: Familiarity with assessment and ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines; training and teaching experience in Chinese pedagogy; and at least one year of administrative experience.
