JULY 2007
clta-us.org Transition from CLTA.OSU.EDU to CLTA-US.ORG:   July 2007 and August 2007 is the period for the migration of the CLTA website from The Ohio State University's host server to the Dreamhost server, together with a change in domain name, from clta.osu.edu to clta-us.org. During this transition period -- beginning with the uploading of the main pages to clta-us.org on 7 July 2007; that is, 07.07.07, for an auspicious beginning -- web pages can be accessed at both websites. However, for now, the online search of the journal index can only be accessed at the clta.osu.edu website. Your patience is most appreciated during this transition period. -- Professor Marjorie Chan, CLTA Webmaster (07.08.07)

(Per Articles IV and V of the CLTA Bylaws, a new term of office for members of the CLTA Board of Directors and elected officers begins in the year of the election upon the adjournment of the Annual Meeting of the Association in November.)

AUGUST 2004
Searchable and Browsable JCLTA Index Online! Try out the new JCLTA Index Online, a searchable and browsable index for our Journal of the Chinese Language Teachers Association. It is now available (as of 31 August 2004), thanks to the technical expertise of Diane Dagefoerde and James Cheng (College of Humanities, Ohio State University). Beginning with Numbers 2 and 3 of Volume 38 (2003), abstracts for the articles are also linked to the index entries. Volume 38.2 (May 2003) contains English abstracts for each article, while Volume 38.3 (October 2003) onwards (under the current editor) will include bilingual abstracts -- in Chinese and in English. (For the purpose of enabling search engines on the Web to find information in the JCLTA index, a webpage with an alphabetical listing by author of the Index is also placed online.)

CLTA Membership - Current Status. CLTA membership status has been added to the CLTA site. Information on when a CLTA member's membership expires (or had expired) is provided in a PDF file on CLTA Membership Expiration Dates, and is linked to the CLTA Membership Information page. The PDF file with membership expiration dates will be updated periodically during the year. Life membership is also listed. [Note: In August 2004, this file was a web page.]

MAY 2004
The Journal's JCLTA Index, a three-page index arranged alphabetically by author, has been moved to its own "JCLTA Index" subdirectory in the CLTA site. Some keywords (in Chinese and character-spaced) have been added to the index to test searching with the Google search engine that is placed in the Journal page in order to Search CLTA's JCLTA Index. (The search engine in the Journal page was modified on 05.15.04 to enable searching only the JCLTA index; this was done in conjunction with the revision of Journal page to UTF-8 encoding.) [Note: With the new online JCLTA Index, this temporary setup has now been disabled. -- mc.]
In doing a keyword search of romanized words in a title, keep in mind that earlier articles, especially those on literature, may use Wade-Giles romanization. Hence, it may be practical to enter alternative romanized forms in a search. (For example, to search for the poet, Du Fu (Tu Fu), try entering a search as follows:   "Tu Fu" OR "Du Fu"   where quotation marks ("...") are used for entering exact quotes, while the logical OR operator (obligatorily in upper-case) retrieves pages containing at least one of the keywords or terms flanking it.)

CLTA Search Engine Update: Placed online (on 05.06.04) for testing is a modified version of CLTA's Google-powered search engine for Basic Search (located on CLTA's main page to search either the entire Web or only within the CLTA site, with the latter the default selection) and for Advanced Site Search (located on its own, separate page for searching within the CLTA site). One more Google-powered search engine has been placed online (on 05.08.04) as a separate page, this time for testing a modified version of Google's Simplified Chinese search engine for conducting a Google Chinese Web Search of all the pages on the Web or of only Chinese pages on the Web, with the latter choice further divided into two choices: all Chinese pages or only Simplified Chinese pages, Note that you can also search a specific site with its own domain name. For example, CLTA's site (or "domain") is "clta.osu.edu"; hence, to search the CLTA site, simply include "site:clta.osu.edu" as part of the search string. For conducting Chinese searches on the Web, input using Pinyin romanization or Chinese characters (traditional or simplified); for conducting English searches, enter English keywords and phrases.
In conducting your searches using Google, keep in mind that there is some delay in Google updating their inventory of web pages. As a result, new information posted in this site will not be immediately searchable -- at least, not until Google has updated of their database to reflect the changes made here. Note also that older versions of web browsers may not support Chinese input for online searching. The modified codes, with UTF-8 encoding parameters added to Google's search engine in the CLTA site, aim to improve searching and viewing of search results in Chinese. (For further discussion of UTF-8 and Google's search engine, see M. Chan's Google review in the May 2004 issue of JCLTA.)

APRIL 2004
CLTA Search Engine: As of 4 April 2004, CLTA's new search engine for searching within the CLTA site has been activated. Powered by Google the search engine can be used for conducting a Basic Search (located on CLTA's main page) or an Advanced Site Search (located on its own, separate page), the latter with a number of user-selectable options for refining the search.

That webpage is currently linked to the CLTA Officers and Board of Directors page. Other webpages for "reconstructing" CLTA's history will be created during the year as a project on "CLTA: History Reclaimed."

The DEALL Search Engine is added to the CLTA home page. Maintained by OSU's College of Humanities, it is for searches in English in OSU's Dept. of East Asian Languages and Literatures. Because this website is hosted within DEALL's web subdirectory in the College server, including "clta" and Booleon operator 'AND' in a search string would restrict searches to those that are CLTA-related or within the CLTA website. Before conducting your searches, please have your web browser set to enable JavaScript.

JCLTA Back Issues. This webpage, which is linked to other information on the Journal, lists those back issues that are still available and can be requested from CLTA Headquarters. For optimal viewing, please have your browser set to enable JavaScript. [Link disabled, 08.31.04 mc]
The CLTA Home Page has a revised web address (URL): http://clta.deall.ohio-state.edu, or simply: clta.deall.ohio-state.edu. Remaining operative is the older URL with "clta" embedded in it, namely: http://deall.ohio-state.edu/clta.

Work on the CLTA Home Page began in early December, with design of logo and color scheme, decisions on layout and content, and the hiring of Alan Peterka as web assistant to help Professor Marjorie K.M. Chan (Ohio State University), a member of the CLTA Board of Directors who was appointed to be CLTA webmaster. The CLTA website resides in the web server maintained by The Ohio State University's College of Humanities, which provides generous technical support. Co-hosting the CLTA home page with the College of Humanities is OSU's Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures.
