Job Description: Advisor/ Chinese Teacher

Advisors are teachers who stay with their small group of 16-18 students for their entire middle school/high school career. The Department of World Languages and Literatures at Pacific University invites applications for Two-thirds-time Chinese Professor, one-year position, begins August 2010, Pacific University, Forest Grove, OR. Masters required; PhD preferred. Teaching experience preferred. 

The primary responsibility is teaching 2 classes per semester, beginning and intermediate levels of Chinese language and culture. The next academic year is the preparation time for a new tenure-track position in Asian Studies or Chinese Studies starting fall 2011, and the selected candidate is expected to promote interest in Chinese language and culture on campus. The candidate is also responsible for supervising Chinese Club activities and participating in on-campus events related to the World Languages and Literatures Department, such as the annual Around the World cultural food festival in the fall semester and the Asian Day festival in the spring semester. 

Forest Grove, Oregon, is located about 25 miles (40 km) west of Portland and 50 miles (80 km) from the Pacific coast. The town has a population of approximately 20,000, and the surrounding area is quite rural. The Director of Education (DE) reports to the Principal. The Director of Education will oversee the day-to-day management of the educational program. Mandarin Dual Language Teacher – New York City

PS 20, the Anna Silver School, seeks a highly qualified teacher for our new Mandarin dual language program.  Our program will start with two Kindergarten classes comprised of both native Mandarin speakers and native English speakers who are new learners of Mandarin.  The two classes will be taught in a “side-by-side” model, meaning that the two classes will alternate between a Mandarin-speaking teacher and an English-speaking teacher on a daily basis.  The curriculum, regardless of language, will follow the regular curriculum map for the grade.  The instruction must include strong scaffolds for non-Mandarin speakers who are newly learning the language.  This position is expected to be rigorous since we are just beginning the program.

Qualifications: APSA’s chaperones are selected on the basis of Chinese language ability, maturity, patience, personal integrity, judgment, enthusiasm, and their ability to earn the respect and trust of teenage students. Most of them are teachers who have traveled abroad extensively and who possess near-native fluency in Chinese as well as an in-depth knowledge of local history and culture.  Exceptions can be made for people with exceptional knowledge of world history, culture, or educational facilitation of teenagers.

Application Procedure:  An APSA Chaperon Application Form, Three school references and a resume are required for consideration. A criminal background check is conducted annually.

Chaperon Duties: 

Pre-Trip: In Hometown: Work with APSA staff, school community, and local resources to provide information on program, Pre-Program Orientations, assistance with passport and visa application procedures, health precautions, packing tips, emergency procedures. Accompany students to airport.

During Trip: 
In DC: Accompany students from airport to Washington D.C. hotel by Metro and work with APSA staff to check students into George Washington University dorms. Act as Resident Advisor in dorms. Participate in Chaperon and Pre-Orientation Training.  

En route: Accompany students from Washington D.C. to Beijing, China.  Help students with travel procedures such as check in, security procedures, overweight baggage, travel documents, and customs. 

Upon arrival in Beijing: Help students clear customs, gather baggage, and obtain a small amount of Chinese currency.  Help APSA representatives accompany students from airport to the High School #2 dormitories and get their room and bunk assignments.  Accompany students on tour of High School #2 to get oriented to facilities and classrooms. Review student behavior, safety, and emergency procedures. Accompany students and facilitate learning during classes, field trips, cultural events, tours, and free time activities. Act as educational and cultural facilitator as indicated.  Serve as Chinese interpreter and translator as needed.  Help resolve disputes, advise on social and emotional issues, assist with accidents, illnesses, or emergencies in partnership with APSA local staff.  Attend Chaperon Coordination Meetings. Help with student project requirements.  Monitor student behavior and safety 24/7 in rotation with other chaperons.  Make sure students maintain tidy rooms and common areas.

Departing Beijing and En Route Home: Check rooms for cleanliness and for all belongings.  Gather keys and return them to school staff.  Have students gather baggage to buses.  Help students check in at airport and observe security and exit procedures.  (Departure taxes? Duty free forms) Count students and monitor at airport and on airplane to return to home towns.

At home: Arrange for student presentations to study body, PTA, school board, or local Chamber of Commerce.  Work with APSA on organizing year round international career development activities.  Monitor progress in Chinese classes and college application process.

The Johns Hopkins University seeks a founding director for a new summer intensive immersion program in Chinese as a Second Language for Specialized Purposes (engineering, medicine and public health).  Funded by the Luce Foundation, this new program will be based at the Johns Hopkins University-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies (Hopkins-Nanjing Center) on the campus of Nanjing University in China.  The Program will provide specialized Chinese language training designed to address specific linguistic needs of students, researchers, and professionals in the fields of engineering, medicine, and public health.  Expected to launch in summer 2011, this program will include experiential research and learning opportunities such as visiting laboratories and attending research/clinical workshops.  Working in close collaboration with the Hopkins-Nanjing Center and the Johns Hopkins’ East Asian Studies Program in Baltimore, Maryland, the Director will develop, staff, market, implement, supervise and consolidate this unique program. The ideal candidate should have an advanced degree and extensive experience managing and teaching in Chinese as a Second Language programs, and familiarity with American educational institutions.
